The following search engines exist on the web to trace individuals and their Email addresses or home pages

WhoWhere? provides a directory of Email addresses and homepages (and address and phone numbers for the US only)
InfoSpace (formerly Who's Who from CityLive! Magazine)
OKRA: net.citizen Directory Service had a listing for me when I checked. If you're not there you can register yourself
Four11 Directory Services. Free directory of online users and their Email addresses. For more services, you need to register. It has now merged with Lookup!
There's also the Internet Address Finder,
Bigfoot Directory,
People Page
Personal Pages World Wide now only covers universities
UK Alumni Page has searches by university and college - it seems to be just starting and hasn't many Cambridge graduates yet
Yahoo's who's who
White Netpages
The Housernet Homepage Directory's goal is "to someday [sic] have a link to every personal homepage that exists".
Last but not least there's Fritz Roth's Page Hunting for E-Mail Addresses which will direct you to more resources

Alternatively you can search by Email.

First try sending Email to
mailserv@internic.net
Subject: whois <name>
with nothing in the body

Or try sending Email to
mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu
and include ONLY in the body the command
send usenet-addresses/<name>
